7 Habits to Retirement Success

They say success leaves clues. Having spent the majority of my career in old line wealth management firms, I have had the fortune of working with many highly successful families over my career and listened to their tales. I worked with entrepreneurs who have started and sold businesses and executives that worked up the corporate ladder from the janitor’s closet. Most were men but many were women and the trend is changing. Every story is unique but most boil down to a combination of vision, discipline, and good timing. We can control the first two but timing is somewhat based on luck.

The same characteristics are true of success in investing and retirement yet we often spend an inordinate amount of time and energy focused on timing and what the market is doing today. You can’t control the market but you can control your planning and discipline around it.

Without question families want results - better performance and alignment with their financial goals. Like losing weight, there is no shortage of strategies for attaining the desired results. Yet at the end of the day it’s the habits – diet and exercise - that have the greatest impact on success.

We are surrounded by News and information that competes for advertiser dollars (often Wall Street). They must entertain if they are to keep up a large audience. We have short attention spans and good advice rarely comes in the form of sound bites. They inspire possibilities and ignore probabilities. They focus on fear and greed and present simple solutions. Why go to the gym when you can simply take this pill or follow that diet? We lead busy lives and the ability to short cut a responsibility is often irresistible.

Applying consistent good habits in all things in life is the result of a belief structure. It’s a philosophy and understanding that inspires you to maintain discipline especially when your monkey brain tells you that you deserve a break or suggests that there might be a short-cut or magic bullet.
